This is my comment in Pilgrim Akimbo’s blog:
http://pilgrimakimbo.blogspot.com/2007/12/der-alte-film-ist-tot.html

I enjoy reading this very much, especially your imagination about what these directors would be if they are house guests.

As for Schlondorff’s DVDs, I strongly recommend YOUNG TORLESS (1966), which is adapted from a novel by Robert Musil, and THE NINTH DAY (2004), which is about a moral dilemma of a Catholic priest during the Nazi era. THE NINTH DAY is like a companion piece to AMEN (2002, Costa-Gavras), but I find THE NINTH DAY more thought-provoking, more philosophical, and less dramatic than AMEN, thus THE NINTH DAY is the one that leaves a more long-lasting impression.

MY SIXTH POLL: “THE CENTER OF THE STAGE IS WHERE I AM”

Filed under: Uncategorized — celinejulie @ 7:10 pm

This is about the poll in my bilingual blog: http://celinejulie.blogspot.com

I haven’t been updating my blog lately, because I’m still suffering from a cold. I will try to write more when I get well.

My fifth poll got 11 votes and the result of this poll of hysterical heroines is:

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER OR PERFORMER?

1.Emily Watson in BREAKING THE WAVES (1996, Lars von Trier) +
Isabelle Adjani in POSSESSION (1981, Andrzej Zulawski) +
Bulle Ogier in THE SALAMANDER (1971, Alain Tanner)

Each of them got 2 votes or 18 %

4.Margit Carstensen in BREMEN FREEDOM (1972, Rainer Werner Fassbinder) +
Adrienne Barrett in DEMENTIA (1953, John Parker) +
Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi in FORGET ME (1994, Noemie Lvovsky) +
Marina de Van in IN MY SKIN (2002, Marina de Van) +

Each of them got 1 vote or 9 %

9.Beatrice Dalle in BETTY BLUE (1986, Jean-Jacques Beineix) +
Jessica Lange in FRANCES (1982, Graeme Clifford)

Each of them got 0 vote.

Thank you very much for everyone who participated in the poll. 🙂

I’m glad Bulle Ogier is one of the top three in this poll. I like her very much. Of course, you know from my name—Celinejulie—that I should love Bulle Ogier, who stars in CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING. You can read a comment on Bulle Ogier here:

5. CANDY MOUNTAIN (1988, Robert Frank + Rudy Wurlitzer)

————————–

As for my sixth poll, it is inspired by the film I saw last week – LA PURITAINE (1986, Jacques Doillon, A+), which uses theatre or stage performance in a very interesting way. So my sixth poll is about the list of my favorite films about stage performance.

THESE FILMS HAVE SOMETHING CONCERNING STAGE PERFORMANCE. WHICH FILM DO YOU LIKE?

–I love all these 15 films very much. Each of them is great in their own ways. It’s hard to choose which film is my most favorite. So I choose to vote for DIVERTIMENTO, THE FALSE SERVANT, and THE PEACH BLOSSOM LAND, because I think each one uses stage performance in a very interesting way.

ALWAYS REMEMBER WHO TAKE AWAY OUR FREEDOM

Filed under: Uncategorized — celinejulie @ 5:17 pm

I have been told that the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) of Thailand has passed a law to limit the freedom of film viewing in Thailand with 79 votes on December 20. This Assembly was appointed by the military junta.

You can read the details in English at Wise Kwai’s blog:
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/vine/journal_view.php?journalid=100000335&entryid=466645&view=public

You can read the details in Thai at:
http://www.prachatai.com/05web/th/home/10642
http://prachatai.com/05web/th/home/10641

I don’t know who are the 79 people who pass this law. Maybe you can find out who pass this law if you call the Senate call center at 02-244-1777 to 8.

As for now, I don’t know what the future may bring. If the laws passed by the NLA bring good things to us, we should always be grateful for them. But if the laws passed by the NLA take away our freedom, we should always remember WHO take away our freedom.

I don’t know about politics. I try to find out the list of the NLA members. There is an English list at the Nation Newspaper’s website, which lists 242 members as of 12 October 2006. There is also a Thai list at the Senate’s website. This Thai list has 250 members.

The English list:

FAV. ACTRESS OF MARCH — CHARLOTTE VALANDREY

Filed under: Uncategorized — celinejulie @ 7:46 pm

–There’s a bribery scandal involving the Bangkok International Film Festival. You can read the details at Wise Kwai’s blog:
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/vine/journal_view.php?journalid=100000335&entryid=466241&view=public

–Tete told me that a female FBI investigated this case and she might have attended the film festivals. I never thought that a film festival in Bangkok would become a scene for FBI investigation. I wish next time they send someone as handsome as Jason Bourne. Just kidding.

–I am ill right now with sore throat. I hope to recover soon.

This is my comment in Jesse’s blog:
http://memoriesofthefuture.wordpress.com

–I’m not a fan of Jane Austen, but I would like to see this film because I like film with many actresses, such as THINGS YOU CAN TELL JUST BY LOOKING AT HER (2000, Rodrigo Garcia), which also stars Kathy Baker and Amy Brenneman.

–I like the idea that “events in the character’s lives mirror the latest Austen book they are reading for their book club”, because though I don’t like Jane Austen, I certainly wouldn’t mind reading her books if doing it means my life would become like the lives of Austen’s heroines. If this kind of thing can be applied to other novelists, I would surely stop reading the novels of Stephen King and Dean R. Koontz and seriously start reading Barbara Cartland’s novels. Hahaha.

–The idea of “the readers’ lives mirroring the books they read” reminds me of the film LA LECTRICE (1988, Michel Deville), which involves the reading of the books by Charles Baudelaire, Marguerite Duras, Leo Tolstoy, Lewis Carroll and Marquis de Sade.

NEW YEAR’S WISH: ABOLISH THAI CULTURE MINISTRY

Filed under: Uncategorized — celinejulie @ 10:53 pm

THINGS TO SEE AND READ

1.WHEN SHE GOT LOST IN HISTORY (2007, Filmsick)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNGweICC3ME

WHEN SHE GOT LOST IN HISTORY is the third film I saw this year which makes great use of ancient ruins in Thailand. The other two films are CITY OF ANGELS (1983, Marina Abramovic + Ulay, A+) and the film which is used as background to the stage performance “NO TRANSLATION” (2007, Terry Hatfield, A). I think the latter film is shot by Taiki Sakpisit.

2.Mike Dekalb’s reviews of SOMBRE

3.A Thai article on Werner Schroeter

4.I have made a New Year’s wish at Matthew Hunt’s blog. My wish is that the Thai Culture Ministry is abolished forever.
