I am very impressed with Tuksina Pipitkul’s interview in Fine Art Magazine, July 2008. The interviewer is Andrews Little, the owner of Conference of Birds Gallery.

Excerpt from the interview:

Tuksina Pipitkul (Haru): As a child, I was always told, “Thais are compassionate.” And “Thais are so helpful”. I frequently heard that “Thailand is Buddhism.” and all aspects of my environment stressed the importance of mercy toward sentient beings. This degree of mercy and compassion can be achieved in meditation.

Now I wonder if what I heard is true. My work seeks to directly challenge this Thai Buddhist moral framework. I have always seen one of my neighbors give food to monks each morning so that he can gain merit. I have also seen this same neighbor kill an old dog that was lying in front of his driveway. He just drove a car right over the animal. At another point I saw him poisoning baby dogs. Belief is complicated, and often contradictory, but there is a limit to how much I hope to interrogate it. I only know that we should respect other sentient things because all such things have only one life.

In my own opinion, I think Tuksina Pipitkul is one of the most interesting Thai female filmmakers this year. The other two are Arpapun Plungsirisoontorn (REPEATING DRAMATIC) and Fari Tesprateep (THE THING).
