POLL 64: MALAYSIAN FILMS

Filed under: Uncategorized — celinejulie @ 12:17 am

This is about a poll in my bilingual blog at http://celinejulie.blogspot.com

My poll 64 is still inspired by Criticine (http://www.criticine.com ), a website of the late Alexis Tioseco. I used to avoid Malaysian films during film festivals, but Criticine changed my mind completely in late 2005.

I think the first Malaysian film that I saw may be DREAM PRINCESS 2 (1998, Aziz M. Osman), which I don’t like at all. I saw SPINNING GASING several years later. I think the film is good, but it doesn’t make me feel very enthusiastic about Malaysian cinema as a whole. It’s Criticine that made me very interested in Malaysian cinema.

Some articles about Malaysian films in Criticine:

  2. Flower IN the Pocket by Liew Seng Tat gets my vote. And so do films by the late YAsmin Ahmad (Rabun, Sepet, Gubra, Mukhsin).

  3. I just saw SEPET and like it very much. I usually don’t like romantic mainstream films, but I like many things in SEPET, especially the parents of the heroine and the big woman in that house. The ending of SEPET is quite intriguing. And the crying of the characters before the ending is truly heartfelt.
